Annotation. The article is devoted to the philosophy of space of the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard, who raised the question of the significance of geographical place in the inner experience of man: the attachment to the childhood home, the feeling of immensity in the forest, the intimacy in a dark nook or the dream of a hermit's hut. Bachelard problematizes a specific experience of spaces that cannot be comprehended within the framework of science, subjected to objectification and abstraction, yet at the same time remains an impressive part of our lives and therefore requires investigation and clarification. The central problem of this article is the search for a language and conceptual construction to reveal the essence of that experience, which is displaced by scientific discourse and with the necessity of resorting to a variation of poetic language. This article attempts to explicate and analyze Bachelard's exploratory approach to space and elements, which has not acquired the character of a coherent and rigorous system, but has encountered important intuitions that we will try to organize. Thus, Bachelard develops a way of linking the diversity of sensations into dynamic constructions, presenting dialectical pairs of spatial metaphors and developing the notions of «archetype» and «complex«. In the last part of this article, we turn to the theories of mimesis by Mikhail Yampolsky, Sergei Zenkin, and Nidesh Lawtoo to clarify the mechanisms involved in the experience of being «grasped» by space. Mimesis represents the direct, bodily experience of the proximity of asymmetrical environments that mutually shape each other. The very essence of the human being is seen as primarily mimetic - and thus open and formed from within the «grasping» of the external environment.
