Annotation. The subject of the study is the Russian social utopia of the early 20th century. The aim of the research is to introduce into scholarly circulation a fragment from the notebooks of Mikhail Osipovich Menshikov – a leading contributor to the publications «Nedelya» and «Novoye Vremya» in the late 19th – early 20th centuries. Menshikov shifted from the role of a literary critic (he maintained a friendly correspondence with A. P. Chekhov, L. N. Tolstoy, and N. S. Leskov) to that of a political publicist and ideologist of Russian nationalism. The text dates back to 1918, a period when the publicist was removed from his position at the newspaper and engaged in socio philosophical reflection exclusively in the pages of his diary. The presented fragment of M. O. Menshikov’s notebooks is held in his personal fund (L 202) at the Department for the Storage of Documents from Personal Collections of Moscow, part of the Central State Archive of Moscow. The fragment contains a previously unpublished work entitled Utopia, which remained unfinished due to the author’s execution on 20 September 1918 on a false charge of involvement in a monarchist conspiracy. Using the method of comparative analysis, the study demonstrates how the published work fits into the broader context of the «Silver Age» era, which, owing to its liminal nature, sparked a surge of utopian thinking. The paper highlights the interplay of objective and subjective factors in Menshikov’s life and work, which led him to conceptualise the future in a utopian form. It is argued that the published fragment meets the most widely accepted characteristics of the social utopia genre.
Keywords: M. O. Menshikov, social utopia, «silver age», hope, liminal period, aristocratic republic, morality, happiness, court, health.
